How Many Mock Tests Should You Take Before CAT?

On this page
"How many mocks should I take before CAT?" is one of the most common questions from serious aspirants — and the honest answer is: enough to master the exam, not so many that you stop learning from them. There is no magic number, but there is a smart range and a smart schedule.
The short answer
For most aspirants, 25 to 40 full-length mocks across the preparation cycle is the sweet spot. Toppers often land between 30 and 40 — but crucially, every one of those was analysed deeply (see our guide on how to analyse a CAT mock). Taking 60 un-reviewed mocks is worse than taking 25 well-reviewed ones.
Quality beats quantity every single time. A mock you don't learn from is wasted time.
When should you start taking mocks?
Start earlier than you think — you do not need to finish the syllabus first.
| Phase | Timeline (approx.) | Mock frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation | 6+ months out | 1 diagnostic mock to know your baseline |
| Building | 4–6 months out | 1 full mock every 2–3 weeks + sectionals |
| Intensive | 2–4 months out | 1 full mock per week |
