XAT is one of India's major MBA entrance exams and the main entrance route to XLRI Jamshedpur. But XAT is not simply another version of CAT. Its Decision Making section, marking system and flexible section order make the exam noticeably different.
If you are planning to take XAT 2027, this guide gives you the information you actually need — from the application process and current fee to the colleges you can target and how to use the roughly five months before the exam.
XAT 2027: Important Dates
The current official schedule gives candidates a fairly long registration window. Registration is open from July 15 to December 6, 2026.

Always check the official XAT website before submitting the form, because dates, deadlines and instructions can be updated.
XAT Application Fees
The application fee is separate from the MBA tuition fee you may eventually pay after admission. For XAT 2027, the current fee structure published by XAT is:

The application fee is paid while submitting the XAT form. College application or programme fees can be separate, so check each institute's admission page before assuming that the XAT fee covers your college applications.
Who Can Apply for XAT?
Candidates need a recognised bachelor's degree of at least three years. Students in their final year can also apply, subject to the graduation-completion requirement for the admission cycle.
There is no restriction on your undergraduate stream. Engineering, commerce, arts, science and other graduates can all take XAT. Specific XLRI programmes may have their own additional requirements, so read the programme-level eligibility rules carefully.
XAT 2027 Exam Pattern
XAT has four sections. The first three — Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning, Decision Making, and Quantitative Aptitude & Data Interpretation — share a 170-minute window. General Knowledge has a separate 10-minute window.
Section

Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning

Quantitative Aptitude & Data Interpretation

General Knowledge

There is no separate sectional timer inside the first 170 minutes. This gives candidates flexibility in deciding where to spend their time.
XAT Marking Scheme
Every correct answer earns one mark. An incorrect answer carries a 0.25-mark penalty. Candidates can leave up to eight questions unattempted without the additional skipping penalty; beyond that, an extra 0.10 mark is deducted for each unattempted question.
There is no negative marking in General Knowledge. GK is not included in the overall XAT percentile calculation, although it can be considered during the selection process.
XAT Syllabus: What Do You Actually Need to Study?
XAT does not have a tiny, fixed chapter list. The official structure gives the broad areas, while previous papers show the type and difficulty of questions you should expect.
The XAT syllabus map
Decision Making is the section that usually requires the most XAT-specific adjustment. The answer choices can all appear reasonable, so learning to identify the most balanced, ethical and practical option matters.
VARC + LR → Read, understand, infer and reason.
Decision Making → Judge situations and choose the best action.
QA + DI → Solve mathematical and data-based problems.
GK → Stay aware of current affairs and static facts.
Top Colleges Accepting XAT
XLRI is the biggest name associated with XAT, but it is not the only option. The official XAT website currently states that 250+ B-schools accept XAT scores.
Some of the better-known institutes include XLRI Jamshedpur, XLRI Delhi-NCR, XIM University Bhubaneswar, IMT Ghaziabad, IMI Delhi, Goa Institute of Management, FORE School of Management, TAPMI, MICA, IRMA, K J Somaiya, Great Lakes, LIBA, XIME, BIMTECH and several others.
The list of participating institutes can change. A college accepting XAT in one admission cycle does not automatically mean that its next cycle will follow the same policy.
MBA Fees: What Can You Expect to Pay?
Do not confuse the ₹2,300 XAT application fee with the cost of an MBA. Tuition fees are paid to the individual institute after admission and can be substantially higher.
The table below combines current published figures where available with recent 2025/26 figures where 2027 fees are not yet published. These are budgeting references, not fixed XAT 2027 fees.

XAT Cutoffs: What Should You Target?
There is no universal XAT cutoff. Different institutes have different requirements, and XLRI also uses sectional cutoffs. Cutoffs can vary by programme and candidate category.

XIM University

*These are planning ranges, not official XAT 2027 cutoffs. Actual cutoffs depend on difficulty, applicants, seats and institute policy. For XLRI-level competition, preparing for 95+ is a safer goal than preparing only for a historical minimum.
How to Use the Five Months Before XAT
You do not need to treat XAT as a completely separate exam. A large part of QA, VARC and DI preparation overlaps with CAT and other MBA entrance exams. The biggest additional requirement is becoming comfortable with Decision Making and the XAT pattern.
The goal should be a gradual shift: first understand concepts, then solve accurately, then solve under time pressure, and finally improve your selection and decision-making in full-length mocks.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
The most common problem is treating XAT exactly like CAT. Students often postpone Decision Making, ignore the unusual unattempted-question penalty, or take mocks without analysing why they lost marks.
Another mistake is looking only at the overall percentile. If XLRI is your target, sectional performance matters too. And when you build a college list, look at fees, programme, placement outcomes, location and eligibility — not just the college name.
XAT Selection Process
The exact selection process varies by institute. XLRI, for example, can consider XAT performance along with factors such as academic background, work experience, extracurricular activities and interview performance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is XAT harder than CAT?
Not necessarily — it is different. Decision Making, the marking scheme and the flexible first 170-minute window can make XAT feel unfamiliar at first.
Can final-year students apply?
Yes, subject to the graduation-completion requirement for the relevant admission cycle.
Can I prepare for XAT without coaching?
Yes. Official previous papers, structured practice, mock tests and detailed analysis can form a complete preparation system.
Does XAT have negative marking?
Yes. Wrong answers carry −0.25, and excessive unattempted questions can attract an additional penalty. GK has no negative marking.
Does GK affect the overall XAT percentile?
No. GK is not included in the overall percentile calculation, although it can be considered during selection.
How many colleges accept XAT?
The official XAT website currently says 250+ B-schools accept XAT scores.
Important: XAT 2027 dates, fees and participating institutes can change. For the final registration instructions, eligibility, fee payment and college list, always verify the official XAT website and the individual institute's admission page.
